Gobnangou Cliffs: A Natural Gem at the Gates of the Atakora
500 km from Ouagadougou, the Gobnangou Cliffs offer a breathtaking spectacle. This unique natural site, an extension of the Atakora mountain range, blends majestic scenery with a geological history hundreds of millions of years old.
Description
Located between Arly and Namounou, the Gobnangou Cliffs rise like silent guardians over a stunning landscape. This residual mound is part of the parallel ridges of the Atakora range, stretching from Benin into Niger and Togo. Formed during the Paleozoic era, they bear witness to a fascinating geological past.
The site is made up of hundreds of quartz and schist hills framing two imposing main cliffs, separated by a valley through which the Pendjari River flows—a natural border between Burkina Faso and Benin. The western side features a dramatic escarpment, while the eastern slope is gentle and elongated, a remnant of ancient tectonic movement.
At the foot of the cliffs, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding hills, explore the local biodiversity, and soak in the tranquility of this preserved site. At sunset, the cliffs glow with golden and orange hues, transforming the scenery into a living painting.
A true invitation to contemplation, the Gobnangou Cliffs will captivate lovers of nature, geology, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
